Gassett Plans to Suspend 2005 Crossbow Season Expansion

Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources Interim
Commissioner Dr. Jon Gassett will inform the Fish and Wildlife
Commission at its quarterly meeting Friday that the March
decision to expand the 2005 crossbow season will be temporarily
set aside. |

Elk Restoration Update and Hunting Information
05/11/05
Kentucky began restoring elk in the winter of 1997-98 to
counties in the southeastern part of the state. Over the next
few years about 1,500 animals were trucked in from Kansas, Utah,
New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon and Arizona. Today, eastern
Kentucky is home to 5,000 free-ranging elk, the largest herd
east of the Mississippi River. |

Spring Turkey Season Update
05/02/05
After the first week of wild turkey hunting in 2005, harvest
numbers indicate the Bluegrass State is on pace to have another
excellent spring turkey season. According to the Kentucky Fish
and Wildlife Department (KDFWR), hunters have reported 13,800
birds taken since opening of the season on April 15. The season
continues through May 5. |

Elk Hunting to Expand to Public Hunting Areas in 2005
02/15/05
The Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commission expanded the areas for
elk hunters to hunt in 2005 to Wildlife Management Areas and
parts of the Daniel Boone National Forest at a special
commission meeting held February 2, 2005. The Fish and Wildlife
Commission recommends all hunting, fishing and boating
regulations for approval by the General Assembly and approves
all spending by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife
Resources (KDFWR). |

Spotlighters Receive Hefty Fines and Jail Time
12/29/04
Two Muhlenberg County men are in jail facing stiff fines after
pleading guilty to charges of attempting to take deer by
spotlighting, and a Wayne County man was fined $1,140 for
illegally killing a black bear in District Court actions this
week.
