Quail Population in trouble.The U.S.'s
quail populations are in trouble. Bobwhite quail are of special concern
with all-time low numbers recorded in much of their range. In fact, as
much as 80 percent of the country's bobwhites have disappeared since
1980. The reason for the quail population plunge is simple — massive
losses of habitat suitable for quail. The solution is much more complex.
Illinois: The state's primary bobwhite range consists of 56
counties in west-central and southern Illinois with a total area of 18.7
million acres, about 52 percent of the state. The state's CRP acres are
responsible for the bulk of the state's quail habitat, accounting for
over 550,000 acres. Thanks to these CRP lands, Illinois hunters
harvested nearly 250,000 bobwhites last year and should expect a similar
harvest in 2005 with call counts decreasing by only 2%. Unfortunately,
that number is still a far cry from the state's 1956 high-point of 2.5
million birds. The brightest spot may be the state's enrollment of their
allotted 20,000 CP-33 acres in the first months of the program.
